Growing beyond 300 square feet
One of the best things about tiny house living is that it teaches you what you actually need. But sometimes, you genuinely need more space -- and that's okay.
How we expanded
- Outdoor living space -- a deck or patio is the simplest and most effective expansion. It's cheap, it doesn't require permits in most areas, and it dramatically changes how the house feels.
- Shed/workshop -- a separate small structure for tools, storage, or workspace keeps the main house uncluttered.
- Awning/covered area -- extends your usable outdoor space in rain or sun.
- Second tiny structure -- some people add a "tiny office" or guest space as a separate build.
The outdoor connection
In a tiny house, the outdoors becomes an extension of your living space. We spent more time outside than we ever had in a traditional home. Investing in your outdoor setup -- seating, lighting, cooking, shade -- is one of the highest-impact things you can do.
